Avocado Oil; Better Suited For High-Heat Cooking Methods Due to Higher Smoke Point
Avocado oil is an edible oil extracted from
the pulp of avocados, the fruit of Persea Americana. It is a heart-healthy oil,
high in oleic acid, which is an unsaturated fat. It is a good source of
monounsaturated fat that has been linked to increasing HDL cholesterol and
reducing LDL cholesterol. Moreover, avocado oil help control of psoriasis and
osteoarthritis, and some of the benefits associated with avocado oil make it
useful for the treatment of carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease,
and coronary heart disease, among others.
Furthermore, due to its moisturizing and
regenerative properties, avocado
oil is widely used in the cosmetic industry. The beta carotene, fatty
acids, lecithin, protein, and vitamins E, D, and A found in avocado oil help
protect and moisturize the skin from damaging UV rays and also increase
collagen metabolism. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents in avocado
oil help skin stay strong, smooth, and elastic. Avocado oil is available in any
health or grocery store, and can be used to heal chapped skin or calm itchy
skin.
Both avocado oil and olive oil benefit heart
health due to their similar content of oleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-9
fatty acid. Furthermore, both promote skin health and aid in wound healing. Avocado
oil is better suited for high-heat cooking methods, as it has high smoke point
compared with olive oil. High smoke point refers to the temperature at which an
oil begins to burn and smoke and is believed to prevent an oil from overheating
because overheating may destroy beneficial nutrients present in the oil.
Avocado oil is the latest trend in healthy
oils around the world. The health benefits of avocado oil are undeniable. Avocado
oil is also used to treat diabetes as it has a low glycemic index by
controlling blood sugar levels. Thus, with the increasing prevalence of
diabetes or increase in health consciousness among people, the demand for
avocado oil is also increasing. According to the World Health Organization
(WHO), diabetes is the leading cause of death in Mexico. Moreover, according to
the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), in 2019, an estimated 9.5 million
